You will see a dramatic increase in the use of Flash, however, it won’t completely replace spinning disk anytime soon. It appears to be the classic scenario of newer, faster, more expensive technology replacing older, slower, less expensive technology as the price is driven down. However, the price of the older slower, technology will also be driven down and the economics of storing massive amounts of data still favor spinning disk. Remember, data is expanding exponentially. I read an interesting IDC article that made some excellent points about social media and the proliferation of mobile devices (think Smartphones and Tablets) generating so much digital content that it is outstripping our ability to store it.
